This work began with the Albany Peace Project in 2014 and was originally designed to determine if an organized group or trained meditators creating a “coherent state” within their own bodies and then focusing peaceful intentions outward, could measurably reduce violence locally. Dozens of similar prior research studies in other parts of the world have pointed to a positive correlation. Karin Reinhold, PhD, Professor of Mathematics at SUNY Albany, has been reviewing the violent crime history from the Albany Police Department to determine if our peaceful intentions have had an impact.
The Peace Project team, lead by founder, Bethany Gonyea, MS and Professor Reinhold, are drawing inspiration for their research protocol from the Maharishi University and from the impressive research team of Lynn Mctaggert, author of The Intention Experiment. To date, dozens of studies have been performed, many published in peer reviewed journals, that suggests when a relatively small amount of people meditate there appears to be a corresponding calming of the entire population.
Global Peaceful Cities Project has been created with the acknowledgement that not all faiths or political parties can agree on doctrine or political strategies, but they can certainly agree to employ focused healing intentions to reduce human suffering.
Establishing peace is work that needs to be done “by the people for the people,” which means we need participation from caring citizens such as yourself to do this incredibly empowering and promising research.

Within 4 short years, we have expanded our efforts to Interfaith Research, Mindfulness in Schools, Meditation Leadership Training, Corporate Mindfulness Programs and The Peace Project has attracted global attention. We are currently poised to launch many more Peaceful Cities Projects, including Phoenix, Dallas, Chicago, Boston, and Mexico City.
How does it work? For two weeks, we provide brief interviews with leading thought leaders and scientists accompanied by intentional coherence based meditations , featuring a different meditation leader each day, and deliver it right to your inbox, to impart both local impact and collectively global impact as we grow.
Many people report that simply knowing that they are part of a large group of meditators, with a common purpose, helps them feel connected and commit to the project daily. So whether you do all 15 days or just a few a week, your participation is a valuable contribution towards the larger whole!
The meditation protocol designed for the study pulls from a variety of proven techniques, which have shown to improve clarity, enhance decision making, and facilitate optimal functioning in many ways, including lowering blood pressure, and decreasing headaches and pain. Thus it’s a win/win situation with the potential to produce powerful and long lasting effects, both inside and out!!
