Most people when they think of happiness, think of having a lifestyle that enables them to acquire many big and small luxuries. However, research has shown that these externally observed factors only are responsible for 10% of our happiness levels.
Happiness has far less to do with what we have, and a whole lot more to do with how skilled we are at ”letting go”. Life will suffocate us with griefs, losses, and miseries if we let it. There is plenty to complain about for all of us. When we get tired of complaining about the present, we go back in our past or to the future to find something else to complaint about. The past is truly the past…it is over, and rehashing that past hoping for a different result only delays happiness. Fretting about the future eclipses the present which is where happiness is…here now…underneath that ruminating mind.
Remember as children our spirit buoyed so naturally after a “loss”? That was before we taught ourselves to ruminate….which keeps our losses alive far longer than they should be.
Meister Eckart told us that “God( a source of happiness) is not found in the soul by adding anything, but by a process of subtraction”
In this class, we are fortunate to have Dr. Karin Reinhold, Researcher for the Global Peaceful Cities Project, share with us skillful means for “letting go” to experience happiness in the here and now.
